Little Hallingbury Walks

These are a few walks around the village of Little Hallingbury in Essex.

They can be walked either way round.

These walks mostly use public rights of way but some sections cross private land, if you want to walk on private paths you should obtain the permission of the landowner.

3. Wall Wood, Hatfield Forest, Leapers Lane

Go through the church yard to Wrights’ Green and go over the motorway. Take the path on the right after the motorway and follow it up the field margins to the gate on the left to Woodside and walk to the first entrance of Wall Wood. After entering Wall Wood take the path to right and circumnavigate the wood to the nortern corner and cross the road to the forest. Bear half right and walk up to the farm to take the exit to Leapers Lane. Opposite the Cholocate Box Cottage take the path back to Woodside Green Pick up the path across the fields back to the car park.

4. Thorley returning through St James’ Park

Go to Gaston Green and take a sharp right at the lane to the mill in order to cross the fields to Dell Lane. Cross the railway and the main road to find the path by the black house. Walk through to Thorley Church to cross over the ring road then turn right to come down through the wood. Croos over to St James’ Park and walk down the middle of the estate and cross the roads to get to the railway crossing. Weave you way to Thorley Wash to cross the canal back to Dell Lane. Crfos the fields to village and back to the car park.

5. Hatfield Forest and Wall Wood

Take the path by the school to the back os Monksbury Farm and proceed across the fieals and the M11 pedestrian bridge to Wood Green. Across the green to the left hand entrance to Wall Wood and follow the boundary to the north-west corner (or proceed straight and turn left at the end). Cross the road and taked the path to the west of Hatfield Forest to take the entrance to the forest further up. Straight into the forest to the farm house and then turn right and head back to southern entrances. Re-enter Wall Wood and follow the northern and eastern boundaries round to the other entrance. Cross Woodside Green and go up the bridle path before turning right to head back to Little Hallingbury by rejoining Goose Lane.

6. Gt Hallingbury & Rushy Mead

Through the church yard to Monksbury Farm and go to New Barn Lane. Turn left immediately after the M11. Pick up the path to Church Road, then through the church yard and beyond to go under the M11 to Jenkins Lane. Cross to Rushy Mead and along the canal to Twyford. Take the path to Port Lane and go through to Dell Lane, then the path from Pond Fields Close towards Back Lane but turn left to cut through to Sawbridgeworth Road and back to the car park.

7. Wall Wood

From the car park walk to the path behind the school and follow the fieldmedges to New Barn Lane. Walk to Woodside Greenn to take the first entrance to Wall Wood and circumnavigate Wall Wood. Turn left out of Wall Wood to pass in front of Monks wood and through beyond to pick up the path back to Goose lane but take the to the fields before returning to the car park.

8. Gaston Green & POW Camp

LH Car Park to Gaston Green, Sawbridgeworth Rd, the Concrete Cow, across fields to Lower Road, POW Camp, Hallingbury Hall, Monks Wood, Monksbury Farm.

9. Bishops Stortford

From LH Car park direct route to Twyford. Across Common to Bishops Stortford return via Thorn Grove, Beldams Lane, Gt Hallingbury and New Barn Lane. Alternative to walk up canal from Twyford adds about 0.5 miles.

10. Beddlars Green

LH Car Park to New Barn Ln, then across fields to Greta Hallingbury. Up to Beddlars Green. Then to the fishing lake by the Korean Crash site. Return via Woodside Green across the fields to the farm by the Church.

11. Lower Sheering 1

Start at Little Hallingbury car park. Go to Grinstead Lane and walk down to Lower Sheering to join the Canal. Go north to the Maltings, cross the Railway and follow Hallingbury road to Grinstead Lane and take the path to the common before crossing to go up to Wrights Green.

12. Country Park

From LH Car Park, Gaston Green through to the Canal. Thorley Wash up to Thorley Church. Across to the Park through the woods to the lake. Return past Thorley Street and Twyford.

13. Thorley

LH Car park to Gaston Green Back Lane down to Dell Lane and past the Three Horseshoes to Spellbrook. Straight across to Spellbrook Lane West then along the footpath to St James the Great at Thorley. Through the church yard to Thorley Street and take the path parallel to Whittington Way to cross the main road, the railway and the canal to walk the towpath to Twyford. Through the Equestrian Centre to Port Lane and continue to Dell Lane. Cross the road to the fields to Monksbury Farm and return to the car park.

14. Ryes Lane and Woodside Green

From Car park through the Church Yard to Wrights Green and Motts Green to pass under the motorway. Walk up the old roman road all the way to the walk through the copse. Then across the field and turn right to walk to the christmas trees and on to Ryes Lane. Return past the Walnut trees and across the field to turn right to Woodside Green and then down New Barn lane.

15. Gaston Green, Canal, Keksys & Spellbrook

From the car park go towards Gaston Green and walk behind the Barclay House. Turn left then right to go down to Dell Lane and turn south down the canal to Keksys. Go over the bridge and walk up towards the road but turn right onto a footpath to go close to the graveyard and then to the road and turn right to cross the main road onto Parsonage Lane. Follow that to Spellbrook lane West and walk back to Spellbrook. Straight across the road, railway and river and pick up the path to the right to go diagonally across the field and through to the main road. Turn right and then left up the footpath to walk round to Monksbury Farm to return through the church yard.

16. Thorley Wash and Spellbrook

This route takes you down to Dell Lane to cross the canal to Thorley Wash. Then turn right to go around Thorley Wash to spot the sculotures. Cross the railway and proceed up and beyond Thorley Church to follow the field edges to Spellbrook.

17. Grinstead Lane to Hatfield Heath, Ryes Lane and Goose Lane

Car park to Grinstead Lane to join the footpath going south. Either go left across the bridge then turn right at the very end of the field, or keep right and follow the path to same path turning right to join it. Then turn south and follow the field edge until you get to the bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left to follow the field edge round to the right to find another bridge (note this part has no PROW, the PROW goes south and then left past the wood to turn left across part of the field to get back to the second bridge). Go north from the bridge to turn right into the tunnel under the M11. Straight on the the main road, cross to the pavement and turn right to go down to the footpath on the left. Follow that keeping right to go past the prison camp to Mill lane. Pick up the path to the left and go through the housing estate and across the common to Dunmow Road. Turn left to go to the sharp right bend but cross to Ryes Lane. Take the footpath on the left to follow through to Goose lane and return.

18. Lower Sheering and Canal

From car park go south to Grinstead Lane and take the footpath south until the copse on the right. Take the path through the copse and then sharp left to cross the field to the main road. Go right along the road a little way and pick up the path to go south again until you come to the farmer’s track. Turn right and follow through to Lower Sheering. Left then right onto to Sheering Mill Lane to the canal. Follow the canal north to Tednambury Lock and turn right to take the path to Hallingbury Mill. This path is often very wet underfoot. Past the mill, up the hill to Sawbridgeworth Road and turn left to return to the car park.

19. LH Gt H Hall HH Sawbo Rd LH Green

From the car park go south to find the path to the green on the right. Cross the green and walk to the middle of the next field, turn left to come out on Grinstead Lane. Head west then south to pick up the path on the right across the fields all the way until the left turn at the end of the woods. Go to the edge of the copse and go diagonally across the field to the Sawbo Road. Cross and turnright to find the path south which you follow all the way to the motorway bridge. Over the motorway, jink left and right to pick up the path eastwards to the junction of paths and turn north to the road. Almost straight across to the edge of the woods which you follow, bending to the left before resuming northwards. Cross the bridge and go diagonally across the field to turn right to the road. Cross, turn right and pick up the path on the left just before High Pastures. Follow that to the end of the POW camp and turn left to go north. After the Hallingbury Hall estate jink right and left to the other side of the field then turn left to come back to the A1060 and follow that back to the car park.

20. LH Cross canal at Hallingbury Mill to Kekys, return along canal

From the car park go towards Gaston Green and walk down to Hallingbury Mill. Cross the canal at Tednambury Lock and cross the field and railway to the main road. Tuen left and walk south to just past the cemetery and turn left to take the path through Kekys farm and across the bridge over the canal. Turn left and follow the towpath until the the bridge after Dell Lane, but turn right at the bridge to follow the path across the flood plane to walk up to Port Lane. If the flood plane is too wet carry on along the towpath to Twyford and back to Port Lane via the Millers Cottage. From Port Lane return to car park avoiding the main road.

90. Detour for Thorley Wash Railway Crossing Closure

In Februrary 2024 the pedestrian rail crossing was “temporarily” closed. This affects walks 12 and 16. The attached snippet map shows a detour.
